I love Professor Horner’s Bible Reading Plan. If you’ve never heard of it, Google it. It is a really fun way to approach Scripture. I also love reading the Bible straight through – from Genesis to Revelation. However, these are not the only ways. In my humble opinion, reading plans are great, but there is also the need to delve into deeper study.
One of the things I’ve discovered over time is that the enemy is insidious in his efforts to draw us away from Scripture. Fatigue, distractions, laziness, busyness – he’ll use any tactic to get us away from the Word of God. Knowing this, we must be determined to drive in the opposite direction – toward Scripture, not away from it. Instead of falling off, why not go deeper?
When I read through the Bible systematically, God always meets me there, and it is amazing to me how relevant what I read typically is to me on a given day. In His sovereignty, God is able to get us what we need no matter where we find ourselves in Scripture. But there is also something to be said for strategically going to passages that relate specifically to a current challenge, struggle, or life stage.
One of the things I find most exciting in life is the fact that I have a lifetime to search the Scriptures. There are so many ways to read and study God’s Word. We needn’t limit ourselves.
If you are struggling to spend quality time in God’s Word, perhaps there is an approach that would work better for this stage of your life. Remember – you don’t have to do what everyone else is doing, and just because you’ve done things a certain way in the past doesn’t mean you must continue with it forever. Give yourself permission to try something new. Who knows? You might really like it. That’s what I did when I first began using Professor Horner’s plan. It was a game changer for me. Maybe there’s a game changer out there for you too!
