“For the Lord is good; His steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.” Psalm 100:5
The heat of the moment is a terrible time to make a decision. Major purchases, intimate relationships, menu selections – when it comes to things like these, I am almost always better off when I’ve given some thought to my budget, convictions, or dietary goals prior to the moment of decision.
Yet, the area of my life where I feel it is most important that I decide ahead of time where I stand is my relationship with God. Quite frankly, sometimes the going gets tough. Life is not always a bed of roses. In those moments, it is best to have already decided what one believes about God. Is He trustworthy or not? Is He faithful or not? Is He good or not? We don’t need these questions swirling around in our heads in the midst of trying, challenging times. These issues must be settled ahead of time.
We all believe something about God. Most of us believe many things about Him. An easy way to determine what we believe is to examine our behavior. I contend that we always (or nearly always) behave in ways that are consistent with what we truly believe. Not what we say we believe, but what we hold to be true deep within us.
In good times and bad, I want my convictions regarding God to be grounded in Scripture – not circumstances or emotions. He is faithful, just, and good regardless of how I may be feeling, or what I may be experiencing in a given moment. Even when life appears to be spiraling out of control, all things are always under His control.
Once a person decides (ahead of time) that God’s Word, not feelings or experiences or other irrelevant data, is the basis of his or her beliefs, a whole new way of living opens up. Talk about peace that is beyond comprehension – this will certainly help us get there.
No matter what you are facing in life, remember that God is good. All good.
