“But when he came to himself,” Luke 15:17a
The prodigal son was “out there.” He had gone off the deep end and wrecked his life. He was living in misery and debauchery. Things were not looking good. Then something happened. He came to himself. Wisdom started to creep in. Common sense began to seep through. And he started to move back toward a life of purpose and meaning.
It is easy to get “out there” in life. It is so easy to get distracted, to take our eyes off Christ, and to begin to drift into sin. And sometimes it’s not even sin, but just a mediocre, survival mode, going through the motions way of life that takes over. Either way, we don’t have to stay there. Sometimes we have to hit rock bottom first, but we can come to ourselves, and reverse course. It’s not too late.
Every day we are faced with choices and decisions. Big or small, they all matter. Forget about yesterday, last month, or last year. What do you need to do today to get back on course? Maybe you’re identifying with the prodigal son. Maybe you feel like you’ve gone too far, and there’s no turning back. That’s not true, friend. One small step in the right direction can make all the difference in the world.
We have a loving God who longs to welcome us into His embrace, no matter what we’ve done. For those of us who have placed our trust in Him, we have no reason to fear, and no reason to ever doubt that His promises remain true.
I don’t know about you, but I want to experience all the fullness of God. Wherever we are in life, let’s commit to making our way back to Him.
