“He will render to each one according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury.” Romans 2:6-8
This is so crystal clear – and scary. We have no excuse, as Paul states in verse one of this very chapter. God’s Word is clear. We know what to do and what not to do – how to live and how not to live, if we read His Word. The question, for me, is not so much “Do I know the will of God for my life?” No. The question is, “Having been presented in Scripture with a clear description of God’s will for my life, am I willing to surrender all to Him and do it?” That’s the question, and it requires a very simple yes or no answer.
My heart’s desire for us is that we not be deceived. It is so easy the tiptoe through life thinking that all is well when it is not well. Please don’t let the mediocrity around you convince you that “lukewarm Christianity” is the norm. It is not the norm. It is dangerous and deceptive.
Here’s the thing. God’s kindness is meant to lead to repentance (Romans 2:4). If we are engaged in ungodly behavior, and the discipline of God has not yet met us in that, it is not because He condones our behavior. It is because He is kindly and lovingly giving us the opportunity to repent. We should never take His kindness and patience for granted.
All around us, and inside of us, are hearts prone to wander. But we don’t have to. We can cling to Christ. We can stand on His Word. We can seek for glory and honor and immortality. We can live for Him, regardless of what’s going on around us. Let’s endeavor to do that!
