This is some of the best assurance I can offer to those who are hurting. In some ways (stick with me) it is better to be broken and crushed. I know this sounds crazy, and most reasonably sane people would disagree with me. But I actually believe that this is true. I can say this because I myself am among the brokenhearted. I am. And I’ve been crushed. I didn’t choose it, and wouldn’t have chosen it – but this is the life I’ve received.
Yet, I wouldn’t change life. Not one part of it. I wouldn’t change my upbringing. I wouldn’t change the struggles and challenges I’ve faced. I wouldn’t change the set-backs and other disappointments I’ve suffered – some at my hands; some at the hands of others. These are all, believe it or not, wonderful gifts from God. Is it possible that I am, perhaps, more intimate with Christ because of my brokenness? Maybe.
At some point, we who follow Jesus must learn to believe in the truth of Romans 8:28 as it relates to the totality of our lives. When Paul writes that all things work together for our good, he means all things. Do you believe that?
